Refractive Surgery (LASIK, PRK): Correct your vision without glasses

What is refractive surgery?

Refractive surgery is an ophthalmological procedure aimed at correcting vision defects (refractive errors) such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and sometimes presbyopia. The goal is to provide the patient with full or partial independence from glasses and contact lenses by precisely reshaping the cornea using a laser.

Who is it for?

  • Aged over 18
  • With stable vision for at least a year
  • Without progressive eye pathology (glaucoma, keratoconus, etc.)
  • In good general eye health
  • Bothered by wearing glasses or contact lenses on a daily basis or in a professional/sporting context

Main refractive surgery techniques

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

  • Most commonly used technique
  • Creation of a corneal flap, then remodeling of the corneal stroma with excimer laser
  • Rapid visual recovery (within 24-48 hours)
  • Painless, with few side effects

PKR (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

  • Alternative to LASIK, used when the cornea is thin
  • The laser acts directly on the surface after removal of the epithelium
  • Slower recovery (3 to 5 days)
  • Increased post-operative discomfort

Other techniques (SMILE, phakic implants)

  • Used in certain specific cases or very strong ametropia
  • Newer or complementary techniques to laser

Progress of an intervention

In-depth pre-operative assessment:

  • Corneal examination, topography, corneal thickness measurement
  • Dry eye tests
  • Analysis of the patient's visual needs

Day of operation:

  • Outpatient procedure under local anesthesia using eye drops
  • Duration of the procedure: approximately 15 minutes per eye
  • The patient leaves a few hours after the operation

Post-operative care:

  • Temporary blurred vision for 24 hours (LASIK) or a few days (PRK)
  • Antibiotic and moisturizing eye drops for a few weeks
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, and makeup for the first few days.

Benefits of Refractive Surgery

  • Visual independence (no more glasses or lenses)
  • Fast and safe procedure
  • Fast recovery with modern techniques
  • Precise and lasting results
  • High patient satisfaction

Expected results

  • More than 95 % patients achieve 10/10 vision without correction
  • The correction is generally stable in the long term
  • In some cases, a touch-up may be necessary after several years
